I am not a journalist or a professional author, though I have had the privilege of being published. My true passion is creating art and music, while fostering connection with people. As an enthusiast and an amateur writer, my intention with this blog is to provide a nuanced and authentic portrayal of life behind bars. I aim to shed light on the treatment of incarcerated individuals, the intricate culture within the prison system, and the myriad experiences—both good and bad, confusing and ugly—that define our daily existence.

Through my writing, I hope to bridge the gap between the incarcerated and the outside world. When you see a correctional facility on the news or encounter someone who has been through the prison system, my goal is to equip you with a deeper understanding of their background and experiences. By doing so, I aspire to foster empathy and encourage the recognition of the humanity in every individual, regardless of their circumstances.

Re-entry Diaries, Part One

September 25, 2024

Fear not, dear readers, our blog will return to it’s regularly scheduled and fabulous writing next week. However, this week, we’re dedicating to the celebration of Dwayne Satterfield on re-entering the world as a free man. He was granted immediate release and, while it was bumpy, he got out the door on the same day.

Congratulations, Dwayne!

He had this to say about his first week:

“Here I am on the outside, unexpectedly, I have been out for exactly six days and in this six days I have had many firsts. Some of those new things have been irritating, exhilarating, frustrating, and hilarious.

I locked myself out of my own room.

The room that I am in has a regular like house key door on it that has a button lock on one side and somehow, that button lock got turned, and I don't have the key for the door. Literally, here I am fresh out of prison, jimmying my window open!

I had to use a chair to get all the way up to it for all my 53 year old ass through it. I almost broke my neck. I think that's enough for now. I will continually give you more insights into my reentry as it happens.

Peace out my friends.”
